Photo by choofly.Sure, Capitals defenseman Mike Green can score goals, but can he hashtag and retweet like the rest of us?
“I don’t really know how to use it that well,” Green admitted about the social networking site Twitter, where, as of January 22, 4,890 people follow his verified account, GreenLife52.
So what prompted him to start tweeting?
“I felt like it was to give the fans more of an insight on our personal lives rather than just seeing us on the ice,” Green said.
Green’s insights so far have included plane troubles, behind-the-scenes looks at his Geico photoshoot commercial with the Caveman (whom Green pronounced “my favorite commercial superstar”), and a plug for coffee over tea. Green even semi-waded into the Team Jacob vs. Team Edward fray by asking if he should see New Moon at the theater. His reply sent off a firestorm of 140-character movie reviews and pleas not to ruin his reputation. As of this week, someone was still warning him against spending the ten bucks, telling him it’s “nothing but tweens s[c]reaming at robert pattenson.”
Those who direct negative comments to @GreenLife52 should realize that there’s a chance they’ll be read by the same eyes that found the weak link in nine different goalies’ armor this season (including Martin Brodeur). Green admits some people can be “kind of nasty” with their Twitter responses, but he takes it all in stride.
“It’s interesting,” Green said. “It’s funny how people can hide behind the internet.”
