Good morning, Washington. I’m afraid I have bad news: those dastards at the Office of Personnel Management say that you have to go to work. I know, I know. Reputable news outlets were predicting as much as three feet of snow! Forcing workers to head into the office under such (theoretical) conditions is an act of near-criminal callousness. There, we said it.
About That Snow: By most accounts the snow’s effects aren’t that bad, the occasional flipped tanker truck notwithstanding. Still, there are a number of closings and delays — you can find an updated list of them here. And of course, there are rumors of a weekend storm here in the east, whispers of a nameless fear… but for now we’ll content ourselves with gently stoking your sense of dread. More as it’s warranted.
Council Moves Forward on Elected AG: The Post reports on yesterday’s council vote, in which legislation to make the city’s Attorney General an elected position was approved 12-1. The bill wouldn’t take effect until 2014, and would require congressional approval. Council members stressed that the measure is unrelated to their sometimes-tense relationship with current AG Peter Nickles. Ahem.
Briefly Noted: Virginia legislature approves raising state’s maximum speed limit to 70… MARC riders to be subjected to more nonsensical security theater at Union Station (as is everyone else)… Va. Tech student Morgan Harrington’s death ruled a homicide… Trial of accused street racer involved in fatal accident begins… Council goes after Sinclair Skinner after he failed to show up for subpoena… Arrest made in murder of mother and son in Dale City…
This Day In DCist: One year ago we were also staring down six more weeks of groundhog-given winter, and the city council was considering whether to start giving restaurants letter grades.
