News broke this afternoon that the AMC Tysons Corner theater is all set to launch its IMAX expansion. The IMAX section of the theater is scheduled to open to the public on Friday, March 5, and reporters have been invited to a pair of preview screenings, of Under the Sea 3D, this week to check it out. The Going Out Gurus noted the development earlier this afternoon.
The only problem is that this likely isn’t really IMAX, or at least not what IMAX used to mean. As has been well documented by irate bloggers, the AMC and Regal rollouts of “IMAX” into existing multiplexes generally feature slightly bigger, but not actually standard IMAX-sized screens. IMAX as a company has decided not to differentiate between the giant 76′ by 97′ screens they started with and the 28′ by 58′ ones featured in these expansions. Yes, the screen is a little bigger than a regular screen, and yes, it features digital projection and a sound upgrade. But you’re also being charged the same price for this “IMAX” experience that you are at an actual IMAX theater.
Many moviegoers may still be sufficiently wowed by AMC “IMAX” not to mind the difference, but don’t be fooled into thinking you are getting real IMAX.
