Howdy, everybody, and dare I say — good morning? Though it threatened snow all night long, not much more than a winter flurry fell and nothing stuck. The city was spared the worst of the so-called snurricane that blanketed New York. At this point in time this winter, it is news when the sky does not fall. Then again, I’m not sure I respond to awful weather any more. What is it psychologists call it?
Today is a happy day for people who have had exceedingly few opportunities for a promenade this winter. But for anyone still incapacitated by a devastating hangover, take heart! It is your day, too! The Washington Post reports that the Metro Police Department is investigating a problem with its breathalyzers, which, apparently, are not and for some time have not been accurate. The Post followed up on an NBC Washington story that said that “[h]undreds of people convicted of drunken driving in D.C. may be off the hook due to flawed breath-alcohol tests.”
Convictions dating back as far as October 2008 could be overturned due to the discovery that 8 of the department’s 10 Intoxilyzer breath-testing devices do not work. It would be a terrible outcome for drivers who drove drunk to get a walk based on a technicality, but flip it around: It is within the realm of reason that someone whose blood-alcohol level fell within legal limits got sentenced as a result of a faulty test. That’s not justice for anybody.
