The Washington Post has a profile on former Pirate Capps, who just signed on as the Nationals prospective closer on a 1-year, $3.5 million contract. Given the state of the Nationals coming into spring training — they are arguably the worst team in all professional U.S. sports — signing Capps can only be a good thing. Despite a rough 2009, in which he posted a 5.80 ERA, some 16 teams expressed interest in signing the Pirate, with the Nats beating out the Chicago Cubs for the pickup. That interest wasn’t necessarily misplaced: In 2008, Capps put up a 3.02 ERA with 39 strikes strikeouts before he was injured, while 2007 saw Capps throw 64 strikes strikeouts with a 2.28 ERA. No doubt, Capps is not the man for your fantasy team — yet. In 2010, he is at best bound to be a good closer on a bad team that will offer him few save opportunities. But solid performance from Wang and some defensive improvements could make Capps just the man for Washington.
