Good morning, Washington. Team USA’s painful loss to Canada on Sunday was perhaps most excruciating for Caps fans. Watching the loathsome Sidney Crosby punch in the winning goal and then celebrate with his countrymen was enough to cause actual nausea. It’s not that we begrudge our friendly neighbors to the north their Olympic moment. It’s just that headlines like “Sidney Crosby a national hero” make us question our understanding of right and wrong. So forgive us if we’re a little slow to get going on this rather beautiful Monday morning. We’re just having a bit of trouble keeping our breakfast down. And praying that Ovie is now more determined than ever to wipe the smile off Crosby’s face.

Metro Fares Now 10 Cents More: We’ve been warning you for weeks, but now it’s finally here. WMATA’s fares went up 10 cents across the board as of yesterday (with the exception of seniors and people with disabilities, whose fares only went up 5 cents). Did you feel that extra chunk of change being taken from you when you exited the fare gates this morning? Or had you already forgotten about it? The temporary fare hike is in effect through June 27. Then in July, expect a much larger, permanent fare hike to take its place.

D.C. Commercial Assessments Drop: Property assessments were mailed out by the District at the end of last week, and as the Examiner notes, the assessed value of commercial property has declined more than 10 percent from a year ago. Still, “the multiyear slide in overall D.C. assessments appears to be easing.” As far as residential goes, the worst declines were seen east of the Anacostia, while “Glover Park saw a 0.26 percent increase, Kent a 3.51 percent rise, Palisades 0.05 percent decline and Georgetown a 2.08 percent drop. Hardest hit west of the river were Trinidad, Mount Pleasant, Takoma and Eckington.” City Desk’s got a map of what the city looks like overall now.

Briefly Noted: Fatal shooting in the 300 block of Parkland Place SE … Pilot killed in Md. small plane crash was Annapolis man … Major cuts approved for cash-strapped Prince George’s County Schools … Metro rehires Art in Transit director … Driver intentionally hit four people, police in Chillum say.

This Day in DCist: In 2009, Jim Bowden resigned as General Manager of the Nationals amid scandal, and in 2007, George Michael retired from WRC/NBC4.
