Good morning, Washington! today’s weather may be set to be varyingly gray, snowy, rainy and gross, but it’s going to be a beautiful day for a lot of D.C. residents: today the District begins accepting applications for same-sex marriage licenses. The Carl Moultrie Courthouse will probably still seem ugly, though. Some things just can’t be prettied up, even through the rose-colored lenses of long-awaited romantic fulfillment.
Former NJ Transit Chief Eyed for WMATA Job: You may have seen us tweet about it last night: the Post is reporting that the former head of New Jersey Transit, Richard Sarles, is likely to become Metro’s interim general manager. According to the Post account, Sarles amassed a solid record in New Jersey that included oversight of a major new construction initiative and steady fares even in the face of a budget shortfall. He could be confirmed as interim manager as quickly as this Thursday.
Barry Addresses Supporters: Shortly after being censured at yesterday’s City Council session, Marion Barry headed to a friendlier venue, delivering a State of the Ward address to supporters at Mathews Memorial Baptist Church. WJLA has an account of the event and some video, including Barry declaring that, “They can take my committee chair; they can’t take my dignity.”
Bunning Folds: It was a national story, but Sen. Jim Bunning’s stalling tactics were close to having consequences for many local workers. Well, no longer: the Kentucky Republican has relented, meaning, among other things, that no DOT workers will be furloughed and that benefit extensions for the unemployed are now awaiting the president’s signature.
Briefly Noted: Last night a double watermain break shut down roads in Crystal City (the Post says you should still try to avoid the roads around there)… Maryland residents may soon start paying another dime per drink… Authorities assure Loudoun residents that explosions are perfectly normal… Va. legislature approves concealed carry in bars… Fire at Black Salt Fish Market last night led to road closure in NW… Six charged with human trafficking in connection with prostitution ring… Man arrested for drunkenly disrupting Girl Scout meeting…
This Day In DCist: One year ago a Metrobus driver punched McGruff the Crime Dog.
