I Dream Awake, presented by the new A Pop-up Project, is the first in a series of pop-up galleries, temporarily taking over the former Numark Gallery on E street. The show brings together an eclectic array of artists and media tied together with a theme of dreams and unconscious reality.

Artists from New York, L.A. and D.C. present the overall theme well. It is obvious and easily recognizable in the blurry imagery found in Susan Burnstine’s black and white photography and Laurel Hausler’s messy and dramatic paintings, or the fantastical yet simple compositions by Vonn Sumner. Other artists include Mikel Glass, Margaret Bowland and locals, Rosemary Feit Covey, Lizzie Newton and Tim Tate.

Rosemary Feit Covey’s take on the theme tends to the macabre, with nightmares ranging from plague to fetishes. Her style is illustrative, using wood engravings that tell a story about these nightmarish things. Each work is printed in black and are heavy on detail. Her amazing use of stippling and cross hatching help achieve texture and contrast within the wood engravings.
