- Mayor Fenty dropped his 2011 budget proposal today. The Post digs into the numbers, which includes the elimination of 385 jobs, a salary raise freeze, a 25-cent increase in parking meters fees, a 1 percent tax on hospitals … and an increase in public school spending. Mike DeBonis notes that a last-minute change to a proposal to scale back the Office of the Tenant Advocate led to the budget books having to be reprinted, a decision that cost taxpayers “in the tens of thousands.”
- The Washington Times’ Jeffrey Anderson continues to plug away at Vince Gray’s fence problem, noting that the D.C. Department of Transportation still says the mayoral candidate has not filed for the proper permit. Apparently, Gray’s attorney, former D.C. Attorney General Robert Spagnoletti, filed the paperwork with the wrong government agency.
- Both the Post and City Paper cover Wednesday’s oversight hearing on the D.C. General family shelter. Writes Jason Cherkis: “Wells had announced the hearing in advance. The nonprofit had signed up a large contingent of speakers and tried to fill at least some seats with residents in new Families Forward t-shirts. But when it was their turn to speak, the nonprofit’s staff didn’t have solid answers.”
- Warm weather is here at last, and Frozen Tropics shares that Philadelphia Water Ice on H Street NE is set to reopen for the season on Friday, with water ice giveaways all day.
- Prince of Petworth notes the 10th Street exit of the U Street Metro station was temporarily closed today for emergency escalator repairs.
- New Columbia Heights points to a Georgia Avenue Community Development Task Force survey to gather input on possible improvements to the thoroughfare.
