In what is sure to be a crescendo of speculation about what the Redskins will do in this year’s NFL draft (set for April 22), Post columnist Thomas Boswell became the latest to weigh in on whether or not the team should try to move up to get consensus top pick Sam Bradford, who didn’t play most of last year due to injury.

The short answer to this question is probably “No, they should not,” because they desperately need help at offensive line.

But Boswell raises the specter of the Giants trading to get Eli Manning, who went on to a somewhat improbable Super Bowl win over the then-undefeated Patriots.

Not unlike last year’s Redskins, the Giants had a vaunted defense, including Michael Strahan, Osi Yuminyora and Justin Tuck, in addition to an aging running back in Tiki Barber, who eventually retired the year before the Giants won it all. The Giants had tried to make due with retreads like Kurt Warner and Kerry Collins at QB, with a few draft busts like Jesse Palmer, who is more famous for appearing on The Bachelor and now ESPN than for his pro career.

At the same time, the Giants have pretty much fallen apart since that Super Bowl run, due to Strahan’s retirement and Plaxico Burress’ legal issues, so you wouldn’t exactly say they are a great model for success.

But both of the teams in this year’s Super Bowl had quarterbacks who were taken very high in their respective drafts, although Brees was actually let go from San Diego, who eventually got Phillip Rivers in the Eli Manning trade.

Adding some intrigue to the Bradford talk is that he’s also known for being one-sixteenth Cherokee. It would be an interesting situation to say the least to end up with a face of the franchise who might uncomfortable with wearing the Redskins’ logo.

The Redskins have already brought in one free agent QB, former Chicago Bear Rex Grossman.
