Constantly I am arguing with friends that Dulles International Airport is the coolest airport even though it’s much farther from Northwest than Washington National Airport because Dulles was designed by Eero Saarinen, who is the boss of all bosses. There is no question in my mind that had Saarinen’s original vision been realized — a vision that included lounges in the awesome people movers that some DMV residents mistake for being not awesome — there would be no debate. Instead, some of his most distinctive features are being phased out in favor of the AeroTrain, which does not even have the decency to be called the EeroTrain. In any event, the Washington Post reports on a development that is sure to nudge Dulles over the top — while emphasizing the spirit of Saarinen’s design. The Zero Gravity Corp. is now offering, no joke, zero-gravity simulation flights from Dulles. What could be more appropriate to the architect’s swooping Dulles design and aerial aesthetic? I like National’s Terminal A as much as the next guy, but now I can add untoward Newtonian constraints to my list of complaints about that airport.
