The Obama family observed Easter Sunday at the Allen Chapel AME Church this morning, a large, historically black Methodist church located at 2498 Alabama Avenue SE, according to the Associated Press. The Obamas arrived at the church, which lies at the confluence of the Garfield Heights, Woodland and Skyland neighborhoods, in time for the 11 a.m. service.
Much of this morning’s reporting about the Obamas’ decision to attend Allen Chapel is focusing on the church’s somewhat relative proximity to the site where multiple people were killed in a flurry of gunfire on Tuesday night. Washington Post reporter Hamil Harris notes that while the church was selected for its deep commitment to the community and not to explicitly help repair the damage from that tragic incident, Obama’s visit is, understandably, a very bright spot in what has been a difficult week for many.
