Kentucky Hot Brown image courtesy of ThePicManFor those of you who like to get your gorge on, there are two eating competitions going on around town this Saturday, April 10. The first, at Bourbon in Adams Morgan, features the Kentucky Hot Brown, which is without a doubt a coronary on a plate. The second is at Wing Hub in Bethesda, and features, what else? Buffalo wings.
Bourbon is hosting their 2nd Annual Kentucky Hot Brown Eating Contest from 5-8 p.m. For those unfamiliar with the dish, it features a slice of bread with turkey and bacon topped with cheese and gravy. The bread is then broiled until crisp. So naturally that should make for an interesting competition. No doubt some of the commentariat are pretty keen on them, and up to this matching of gag reflexes and anti-cholesterol meds.
The event offers two challenges. The Speed Challenge pits contestants against each other to see who can consume a super-sized hot brown first. The Endurance Challenge then gives competitors an hour to eat as many mini-Hot Browns as they can. The cost of competing in one event is $10, or $15 for both. The winner gets a $50 gift certificate to Bourbon (including booze) and a $25 bar tab at Pharmacy Bar. Second prize will receive a “fist-pound/explosion.” To enter, e-mail papapatrick@gmail.com.
The other eating competition is Wing Hub’s 2nd Annual National Wing Eating Championship, which coincides with the Bethesda Spring Bar Tour. This event also features two challenges: who can eat the most wings in four minutes, and who can eat the most Kiss of the Demon Wings (which the site calls reckless and dangerous) in four minutes. The winner of each event with receive a $50 gift certificate to the Wing Hub. The event starts at 7:30 p.m., and registration is free. Entrants can sign up in person.
And if you go to either event just as a spectator, don’t forget that the little guys always eat the most.
