Firefighters responded to a blaze at Eastern Senior High School at 1700 E Capitol Street in Northeast today after smoke was reported late this afternoon. The building was quickly evacuated and a second alarm was sounded. Emergency officials reported no injuries, according to D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services. The school, which is currently undergoing a $76 million renovation begun in 2008, did not suffer significant damage inside the building. The fire occurred on the building’s roof, where a construction crew was working to replace rubberized roof material, D.C. Fire and EMS spokesperson Pete Piringer told DCist. Because the the roof structure is made of concrete, officials expect that fire (or water) damage was confined to the roof’s top. Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Another fire at Green Elementary School in Southeast consumed playground equipment and resulted in soot damage. According to Piringer, rubberized foam material was also identified as a cause of the fire.
