Photo by (afm)The cherry blossom tourist hordes are finally starting to thin out, the convention center neighborhood is getting back to normal, and this weekend’s forecast so far looks decent. But lo, it wouldn’t be D.C. if there wasn’t some other thing waiting in the wings to make city life inconvenient: Metro is warning customers to expect lengthy delays — of up to 40 minutes — all through this weekend. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
The big Rosslyn switch replacement project starts at 10 p.m. on Friday night, which will cause Blue and Orange Line trains both to run less frequently and to share the same track between Court House and Foggy Bottom on the Orange Line, and Arlington Cemetery and Foggy Bottom on the Blue Line. That lasts until closing on Sunday.
Over on the long-suffering Red Line, ongoing track work between Medical Center and Friendship Heights will lead to delays of up to 30 minutes starting at 10 p.m. on Friday through to closing on Sunday. Every other Red Line train traveling toward Shady Grove will terminate at Friendship Heights and return to Glenmont.
And not to be left out, the Green Line is facing its own share of delays, although they’re a bit more minor. Track work between College Park-U of Md and Greenbelt will contribute to delays of around 20 minutes from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
All these planned delays are going to make getting to the myriad sporting events planned for this weekend take a lot longer. If you’re heading to Nationals Park, the Verizon Center or RFK Stadium at any point during the weekend, make sure to leave extra early so you don’t end up missing part of the game.
