Good morning, Washington. It’s 4/20, which means at least once or twice today, you’ll suffer through some awkward attempt at pot humor by a colleague and/or friend. Baked and Wired in Georgetown is even giving away free coffee until 10:30 a.m. in honor of the date (they claim it’s in celebration of having been in business for 4,200K minutes, but they aren’t fooling anyone — getting baked and eating baked goods do go rather well together, if you hadn’t noticed). But all you really need to know is this: the D.C. Council is expected to take a first vote on the “Legalization of Marijuana for Medical Treatment Initiative Amendment Act of 2010” later today. Yes, this vote was scheduled for 4/20. I don’t want to admit that I find this funny. But I do, and it just is. Bad 4/20 jokes may be irritating in the break room, but they are solid gold from the Council dais. Bring ’em on, Councilmembers!

Dorothy Height Dies at 98: Civil rights legend Dorothy Height passed away early this morning here in Washington. The Post has its obituary up online already: “As a civil rights activist, Ms. Height participated in protests in Harlem during the 1930s. In the 1940s, she lobbied first lady Eleanor Roosevelt on behalf of civil rights causes. And in the 1950s, she prodded President Dwight D. Eisenhower to move more aggressively on school desegregation issues. In 1994, Bill Clinton awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.” Height had been in intensive care at Howard University Hospital since March 18, having left her own birthday party that day in medical distress. Statements and messages honoring Height are starting to pour in to our mailboxes, so we’ll share more of those later on. The rest of us should be so lucky to live to be 98, and to spend our lives dedicated to something as meaningful and important.

Wilson High Student Charged With Abducting Teacher: Just an incredibly shocking story. A Wilson High School student has been arrested and charged with abducting one of his teachers, WTTG/FOX5 reports. “D.C. Police said the teen and an accomplice, believed to be an adult, accosted the teacher as she left her part-time job early Saturday morning in Adams Morgan. The two forced the 30-year-old woman into the passenger seat of her SUV and drove to Silver Spring, where they made her withdraw $200 from a bank ATM.” The teacher further alleges the adult suspect attempted to sexually assault her in the car, though she fought back and got away.
