The Community College of the District of Columbia has signed a lease for a nine-story, 88,000 sq. ft. building at 801 North Capitol Street NE, just two blocks from Union Station and a brief bus (or eventual streetcar) ride to the H Street NE corridor.

The deal could signify a major step in the separation of the Community College from the existing four-year UDC, and it also puts a nice dent in the available office space in the District.

CCDC plans to have classes and other student services, including lab space, an auditorium that seats 170 people, a bookstore and a fitness center, offered in the new space by the Fall of 2010.

“We will build a state-of-the-art educational hub for our students, staff, and the broader community in a prime location near Metro, the U.S. Capitol, and numerous federal and District agency headquarters,” said Dr. Jonathan Gueverra, CEO of CCDC. “The space will be designed to enhance student success and meet a variety of academic and community needs.”

While this central location may serve as the “main campus” for CCDC, some classes will still be offered at the UDC-Van Ness campus, while other programs will be located at Bertie Backus Middle School and the Excel Institute.
