JAZZ: This weekend, the GWU jazz department is putting together a small festival of the program’s ensembles to honor Jazz Appreciation Month. Tonight at 7:30 p.m., the Blues Revue will take the stand, followed by King James and the Serfs of Swing at 9 (a big band conducted by pianist James Levy). Free, at the Betts Theatre inside G-dub’s Marvin Center (800 21st St. NW).
DJ: Red Fridays continues at U Street Music Hall, this time featuring DJ Spun and Solomon Sanchez. $10, 10 p.m.
SATURDAY:
SHOPPING: Georgetown’s 7th annual French Market is back this weekend, on Wisconsin Avenue NW between P Street and Reservoir Road. Chow down on tasty French treats and take advantage of sales of up to 70 percent off at over 30 shops. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
MOVIE: The National Gallery is hosting a free screening of French filmmaker Alain Cavalier’s latest, Irène, which follows the director as he reads through old journals from the early 1970s that describe his feelings in the wake of the death of his wife, Irène. The feature is paired up with a somewhat less personal short, Lieux saints (Holy Places), which establishes an unlikely connection between the rest rooms of Europe and places of worship. 5:30 p.m.
ART: Visit the annual 52 O Street NW artist studio open house this weekend. Meet and see the workspaces of over 20 artists, and maybe even purchase a piece to take home with you. Both Saturday and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Project 4 opens a new exhibit featuring the work of two artists. Tricia Keightley’s paintings are a kind of fantasy-world engineering schematics, while the vivid color schemes in Jenn Figg’s sculptures complement the exhibit. Reception is 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
MUSIC: The Gap Band’s Charlie Wilson will be appearing sans the band, but the legendary Chuck Brown should make up for that during this gig at Constitution Hall. $45-$65, 8 p.m.
Most of the various Hot Chip events (the show at the 9:30 Club, the afternoon DJ set behind the Sweetgreen in Dupont Circle) are sold-out, but there is a pre-party at Solly’s at 5 p.m. where they’ll be giving away tickets to the main event.
OPERA: Washington National Opera opens its newest production, Mozart’s evergreen Marriage of Figaro, tonight at the Kennedy Center Opera House. Teddy Tahu Rhodes stars as the Count in the first cast. A few tickets may still available, call the box office at 202-467-4600. 7 p.m.
SUNDAY:
CLASSICAL: Free with admission to the Phillips Collection is a recital by pianist Ivan Ilić. He will play some of Leopold Godowsky’s arrangements of the Chopin études. 4 p.m.
MUSIC: Perfect show for a Sunday night: Meredith Bragg at Galaxy Hut. Portland’s A Weather opens. $5, 9 p.m.
