In case you missed our retweet last night, the D.C. Zoning Commission on Monday adopted an immediate increase to the cap on bars and restaurants that may operate in the 14th and U street NW corridors.

The new rule allows for up to 30 percent of the linear frontage in what’s called the Uptown Arts Overlay District to be taken up by establishments that serve food or drinks. The Washington Business Journal has a little more.

The increase was adopted on an emergency basis, in an effort to ensure that any current projects will not be derailed by DCRA’s recent move to enforce the arts overlay’s zoning rules. A recent survey found that existing bars and restaurants already occupy roughly 25 percent of the area, which was the previous zoning limit.

The commission is expected to take up a recommendation to permanently increase the cap to up to 50 percent at its June meeting.
