Photo by philliefan99Good morning, Washington. If you’re heading anywhere near the D.C. Court of Appeals this morning, don’t forget that the anti-gay marriage folks will be out in full effect as they wait for a decision in their marriage initiative case. Just something to keep in mind in case you’d prefer to avoid the area. Or you know, if you happened to pack an overripe tomato in your briefcase.
Two Teens Arrested in Betts Murder: Montgomery County police announced two more arrests in the murder of Brian Betts late Monday. Sharif Tau Lancaster and Alante Saunders, both 18, have been charged with murder in the death of the popular Shaw Middle School principal. Police believe that the suspects located Betts through a telephone sex chat line, and that their motive in the killing was robbery. “Betts’s credit cards were used to make purchases in Silver Spring, Oxon Hill, Hyattsville and the District, police said. Surveillance photos show Lancaster, Saunders and Lancaster’s mother using the credit cards,” reports the Post. Authorities were also questioning a third 18-year-old in the case, and, surprise, surprise, the Examiner reports, all three teens were recently within the custody of D.C.’s juvenile justice system. Saunders had actually escaped from a DYRS facility just a few days before the murder, while Lancaster had been in a work release program since January.
Council Set to Make Final Medical Marijuana Vote: The D.C. Council is expected to give final approval today to a bill that would legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes inside the District. In anticipation of the vote, it appears the Washington Post sent reporters Paul Schwartzman and Annys Shin out to find some stoners. Turns out, we’ve got a lot of them. “The popular image of the nation’s capital leans toward the straight and narrow, a town of over-achieving, button-down bureaucrats, lawyers and lobbyists. But meander through any neighborhood from Congress Heights to Friendship Heights, and Washingtonians across race and class lines can be found lighting up.”
