Capitol Hill neighborhood newspaper Voice of the Hill has announced that it will cease publication effective immediately, citing a decline in advertising revenue.
Voice of the Hill was originally founded as a website in 1999 by Capitol Hill residents Bruce and Adele Robey. The paper later expanded to a monthly tabloid newspaper, and was eventually purchased by the Current Newspapers in 2006. Bruce Robey died suddenly last fall.
One of the real tragedies for us is that Voice of the Hill was the only Current newspaper that had a real web presence. The Dupont Current, Northwest Current and Georgetown Current will remain in publication, but they are basically only distributed in newsprint form, and only to select areas. Capital Community News’s Hill Rag will remain to serve the Capitol Hill neighborhood, but it too lacks any sort of meaningful web presence.
