FRIDAY:

LITERATURE: The 27th annual Larry Neal Writers’ Awards takes place tonight at the Folger’s Shakespeare Library. The awards, arguably D.C.’s biggest writer’s competition, honors the city’s top youth, teen and adult literary artists. The ceremony is free and open to the public, but call (202) 724-5613 to make sure there is still room. 6 to 8 p.m.

HAPPY HOUR: Join Ward 6’s Tommy Wells for a tour of the Streetcar Showcase and an after party at SOVA Espresso & Wine (1359 H Street NE). 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., details here.

ART: Hillyer Art Space hosts an opening party for Valentine Wolly’s Flipped from 6 to 9 p.m. DJ Double Stuff will spin, $5 suggested donation.

JAZZ: Brothers Nathan and Noble Jolley are two extremely talented musicians who are on the cusp of more widespread recognition. They’ll be at Bohemian Caverns tonight and Saturday for 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. sets. The band includes D.C. native and 2009 Monk Competition winner Ben Williams on bass, and innovative saxophonist Casey Benjamin. Tickets are $18.

DJ: Tonight’s “Red Friday” set at the U Street Music Hall features Mike Simonetti of Italians Do It Better fame along with local dancefloor stalwart Chris Burns. Free before 11 p.m. with RSVP/$10 after. 10 p.m.

MUSIC: A strong local line-up tonight at The Rock and Roll Hotel. Imperial China headlines a full bill that also includes Loose Lips, Buildings, and Connect the Dots (la la Lala). 9 p.m., $10.

MOVIE: The Rosslyn Outdoor Film Festival returned last weekend and runs all the way through to Sept. 3. This year’s theme is “I Love the ’90s,” and tonight’s selection is the dated-but-somehow-still-funny Wayne’s World. At Rosslyn’s Gateway Park (1300 Lee Highway), film starts at dusk.
