Statements honoring 18-year-old D.C. Council intern Alonte Sutton are landing in our inbox. Sutton was shot and killed in Southeast D.C. at some point over the weekend, his body discovered Sunday afternoon in a wooded area near the 200 block of Newcomb Street SE.
Sutton was a senior at Ballou Senior High School, and served as a D.C. Council intern two times, once last summer in the office of At-large Council member Michael A. Brown, and then again in the 2009-2010 session, in the Support Services Division in the Office of the Secretary to the Council.
The Washington Post has reported that witnesses say Sutton had been in a dispute with a man over the weekend “after Sutton refused to give the man’s girlfriend a ride somewhere. Sometime after that dispute, family members and friends said, the man returned with a gun and opened fire on Sutton, following him as he tried to flee into the woods.”
