  • The Washington Business Journal covers Vincent Orange’s council chair campaign kick-off, and finds that the candidate is somewhat bizarrely instructing supporters not to talk to reporters. ‘When asked why she’s backing Orange, a woman carrying a Vincent Orange sign had briefly answered, “He’s the smartest person running,” before being told that supporters were not allowed to give interviews to the press.’
  • The Washington Post previews tomorrow’s Metro board meeting, noting that an agreement on a large fare hike is getting close. ‘Board member Jim Graham of the District said that the board is nearing consensus on the fares, with “just a few outstanding issues.” But he said that if the board reopens discussion on other major issues, such as service cuts and using capital funds to pay for preventive maintenance, “there will be much longer discussions.”‘
  • WTOP finds that the District is on pace to set a record for marriage license applications this year, thanks to the legalization of same-sex marriage. “In the first three months of 2010, the court processed 376 applications. Since March 3 — when gay marriage became legal in the District — the marriage license office has received 2,082 applications.”
  • DCmud reports that Van Ness residents will be getting a new Walgreen’s on Connecticut Avenue, whether they like it or not. “The 20,000 s.f. store, designed by Rust Orling Architects, will sit a mere 50 feet from the Van Ness Metro Station and will provide 27 spaces of parking on one level beneath the store.”
  • Greater Greater Washington publishes the average salaries of WMATA employees. “When you compare this compensation against the Federal government’s GS scale and equivalent jobs posted on USA Jobs.com, the WMATA employees typically make a couple of dollars more per hour compared to Federal workers. They also enjoy better pensions, but no defined contribution matching like TSP, and have higher employer contributions to health care plans.”
