Low-cost intercity bus carrier DC2NY has announced new service between Washington and the Delaware beaches this summer.

Beginning Memorial Day weekend, the “upscale bus” company will launch the new routes, shuttling beachgoers between Dupont Circle/Union Station and Rehoboth Beach/Dewey Beach in Delaware. One bus each weekend day (Friday night, early Saturday and Sunday mornings, plus also Monday mornings) will head out to the coast, with return trips to D.C. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday evenings, and extra trips promised on holiday weekends.

It’s approximately a 3-hour trip, and will cost $35 each way. You can take a full weekend excursion, or just a day trip, with departures from D.C. hitting the road at 7 a.m., and returning at 7:15 or 7:30 p.m. (depending on your point of departure). Each trip comes with free wi-fi, a bottle of water, and rewards points redeemable toward future travel.

Departures are listed through the end of August, and DC2NY’s website says of the new service that “if you use it & like it, we’ll plan to go all summer long.” So if the service isn’t much of a success, it sounds as though it could be axed mid-season.

In 2007, the now defunct Rehobus ran charters between Adams Morgan and Rehoboth beach. Before and since then, feasible public transportation options between the Washington region and the First State’s beach towns have been few and far between.
