Photo by little-wingsGood morning, Washington. The sun is shining! You probably don’t need a sweater today! This will last … only through Friday, apparently. We hope you’re able to take your lunch and enjoy it outside today. As for the fickle spring we’ve been treated to so far this year, all we have to say is that the month of May is officially on our list.
CDC Misled D.C. About Lead in Water: The blockbuster news this morning comes courtesy an investigation by the House science and technology subcommittee. As Carol D. Leonnig reports in the Post, the subcommittee has found that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention “knowingly used flawed data to claim that high lead levels in the District’s drinking water did not pose a health risk to the public.” Wow. The report also “raises concerns about children in 9,100 residences throughout the city with partial lead-pipe replacements. Their parents may not know CDC research has found that children in such homes are four times as likely to have elevated lead in their blood.”
Senators Want More from Metro in Terms of Safety: Interim WMATA General Manager Richard Sarles appeared before a Senate transportation subcommittee Wednesday to reiterate his safety priorities for the transit agency. WAMU reports that Md. Sen. Barbara Mikulski told Sarles she “isn’t impressed with his benchmarks.” Still, as the Post notes, Mikulski said she “does not intend to hold up” the federal money that Congress already pledged, though “she will hold Metro accountable for reporting to her committee not only on progress made but also on how the improvements are measured.”

This Day in DCist: In 2009, we attempted to determine the start date of the city’s summer crime season, and in 2008, the city shut down an art space, trapping a number of goldfish inside.
