The New Pornographers

Even with a good range of music venues of all sizes, including a few decent outdoor sheds and a world-class rock club in the 9:30, D.C. typically plays second fiddle to places like Chicago, Seattle, Boston, even Minneapolis on the list of top rock cities. But no more! Ace power pop tunesmith and leader of indie supergroup The New Pornographers, A.C. “Carl” Newman has declared our beloved Washington, D.C. as his favorite city to play on tour.

Here’s what Newman said in a recent interview with Pitchfork” “Of course, I hate to pit cities against other cities, but Washington, D.C. has always been a really, really great city. It’s always the city where our shows seems to sell out the fastest– knock on wood. Now that I’ve said that, I’m sure no one will go.”

Nothing to worry about, A.C. Your band’s two-night stand at the 9:30 on June 22 and 23 has been sold out for quite some time. Newman continues, “For my solo tour as well, it’s hands down my biggest market. On my solo tour, I might travel around and there will be like, 200, 300 [people in attendance], and then like, ‘Wow, there’s 700 people at this show.’ I’ve just always been shocked at Washington, D.C., just by the amount of people that are into it there. I think every artist has some weird city where, for some reason, people really love them. Like, they’ll be super popular in Cleveland, and nobody knows why.” So readers, any idea why the New Pornographers are so particularly loved here in our nation’s capital?
