We got a brief reprieve last weekend, but major Metrorail delays are back in full effect this weekend, as well as the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.

Planned work on the Red, Orange and Green lines this weekend will lead to lengthy delays of up to 30 minutes.

Red Line: A pair of trouble spots to be aware of on the long-suffering Red Line. Rail fastener replacement work scheduled to take place between Grosvenor-Strathmore and Medical Center will cause trains to share one track between those two stations starting at 10 p.m. on Friday, May 21 through to closing on Sunday, May 23.

Then over on the elevated tracks between New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U and Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood, trains will also be single-tracking for maintenance on the bridge structure. Those delays will also be in effect from 10 p.m. on Friday to closing on Sunday.

Thanks to both of these projects, Red Line trains will depart only every 30 minutes from Shady Grove and Glenmont all day on Saturday and Sunday. Every other train traveling in the direction of the Shady Grove will also terminate at Medical Center and return to Glenmont, while every other train traveling in the direction of Glenmont will terminate at New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U and return to Shady Grove. Trains will operate approximately every 15 minutes between Medical Center and New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U.

Orange Line: Crosstie replacement work between East Falls Church and Ballston-MU will cause 20 minute delays while trains share one track between these locations starting at 10 p.m. on Friday to closing on Sunday.

Green Line: Ongoing welding work between College Park-U of Md and Greenbelt will also cause delays on that end of the Green Line. Trains will share one track between those stations from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

And be aware of major work planned on the Orange Line for Memorial Day weekend, and beyond. Train service will be halted entirely between East Falls Church and West Falls Church-VT/UVA Metrorail stations during the holiday weekend (May 29 to 31), as well as the first two weekends in June (June 5 to 6 and June 12 to 13) so that the Dulles Corridor expansion can begin the first of its major construction activities.
