The downtown location of Gifford’s Ice Cream (555 11th Street NW) hopes to reopen in about a week, following a temporary closure ordered by the D.C. Dept. of Health.

As PQLiving first reported, the ice cream shop was forced to close May 12 after the health department determined that its operating license had lapsed. An inspection report shows that the store also lacked a certified on-site food manager, a requirement for any business serving food in the District.

Gifford’s has yet to request a re-inspection, according to DOH spokesperson Dena Iverson. But an employee at the downtown location and an operations executive at the company both confirmed that the store is currently working to comply with city law and obtain a new license. A Gifford’s spokesperson said that the company hopes to re-open the shop within the next 10 days.

Gifford’s operates four other stand-alone locations in the D.C. metro area.
