Happy Memorial Day, D.C. Here’s hoping that you’re all having an easy and languorous 3-day weekend. I know Sommer is enjoying hers, so this week DCist will be featuring guest editors. So sit back, crack a cold one and find relief from today’s heat. But if you find yourself outside, take note of the sounds of the holiday: the splish-splash at a public pool, the blaring brass of any Memorial Day parade or the low, rumbling remnants of yesterday’s Rolling Thunder ride.

After all, hurricane season starts tomorrow and we’ll be heading back to work.

Metro Police Officers Recognized for Heroism: In light of Memorial Day, it’s fitting to see five of our local’s finest honored for their bravery and heroism. The recognition stems from an incident in April, where the group of five Metro transit officers helped find and evacuate residents of a Naylor Road condominium on fire.

Fairfax County Planners Approve Tysons Corner Improvements: I wonder which hand readers the Fairfax County Planning Commission patronizes, now that they’ve approved a 40-year “vision” for overhauling the Tysons Corner community. According to the Examiner, the commission hopes to quadruple the number of residents in the area to 100,000 and double the number of jobs to 200,000 by 2050. The plan also uncaps restrictions on residential development, with more expected once Metro rail service is extended to Tysons Corner.
