Broken Bells, who in the studio are the talented duo of Danger Mouse and James Mercer, multiplied their band members to seven for this performance. Their opening song featured three dudes playing guitar! And I guess, in a way, it’s reassuring to hear most of the musical elements performed live in the age of persistent backing tracks and samplers. If it takes seven guys to pull that off, so be it.
Danger Mouse, the capricious producer Brian Burton, spent most of his time playing drums for the band, though he occasionally flitted down to the keys or guitar. Mercer’s voice was reverb soaked and haunting. They used the dimensions above the stage to project a huge backdrop of galaxies, suns and the pink Katamari-like planet that adorns the cover of their album. They really started clicking with the crowd on “Ghost Inside,” their third song.
