The newly-crowned King of the Verizon Center and the man who has come to save the Washington Wizards, Ted Leonsis, held an incredibly well-attended press conference at his new Chinatown digs this afternoon. Not surprisingly, a quick glance at Twitter reveals that the Leonsis era is going to be an interesting one for the Wiz, just as transparent and fan-friendly as his ownership of the Caps has been.
And why not? Such an approach has been mighty successful for Leonsis. Take, for instance, the fact that every Caps home game next season has already sold out.
Leonsis — who has dubbed his new ownership group Monumental Sports & Entertainment — called the Wizards “a sleeping giant” with “upside from a business standpoint,” while still being honest that the team, despite an incoming young stud in John Wall, still has a long way to go on the court. But that’s hardly the most pressing thing on fans’ minds: apparently, Leonsis has gotten multiple emails about the dire ketchup situation at the Verizon Center’s concession stands.
But since he is a man of the people and therefore incredibly concerned about such minutiae, Leonsis has released a new email address — thewashwiz@aol.com — for those who just can’t seem to get over empty ketchup containers at busy sporting venues. The best part: I have no doubt that Leonsis will actually make sure to rectify issues like a non-functioning urinal on the concourse level or that time that your chicken fingers were not adequately breaded. Is this guy the best owner or what?
