There is a famous contest in East Texas in which hopefuls line up to put their hands on a truck. In that contest — the subject of an incredible documentary — the person who can keep his hands on a pickup truck the longest gets to drive it home. Watch the trailer and toss it on your Netflix. You will thank me.
As it happens, the District is giving residents a chance to put their hands on its trucks through 2 p.m. today. Over at the RFK Stadium lot, the D.C. government is rolling out dump trucks, trash trucks, cement trucks, water quality lab trucks, a police helicopter (not a truck), a street sweeper and other trucks. The event will bring together the best from all your favorite fleets: the Departments of Public Works and Transportation, Metropolitan Police Department, Fire & Emergency Medical Services, and more.
You don’t get to take any of them home, and the event has a kind of pervy name (“Truck Touch,” ew), but if you’ve ever hoped to see yourself on a combo jet-vacuum truck, here’s your chance. I’m willing to bet that more than a few folks find this appealing. As a Longview, Texas, resident explained, “Truck makes money.”
