News item from yesterday that’s not to be missed, history buffs: ABC7 reports that a contract has been named for $1.12 million to restore the Superintendent’s Lodge and Rostrum at Battleground National Cemetery, final resting ground for 41 Union soldiers who died in the District’s only Civil War battle. The Battle of Fort Stevens is notable for another reason: President Abraham Lincoln personally observed the fighting over the two-day battle. The stimulus funds, which were awarded to EGI Corp of Rockville, Maryland, will go to restoring the lodge used by the cemetery’s superintendent and a dais installed in 1914 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the battle. Which is a great development for keeping the cemetery — but the battleground itself could disappear without a concerted preservation effort.
