The Washington Examiner reports that three thieves snuck into Mayor Adrian Fenty’s Crestwood garage and nabbed two of hizzoner’s mountain bikes, right under the noses of the Mayor’s security detail. The thieves left their own crappy bicycles and took off with the Mayor’s more pimp rides back on June 3. The bikes were each about a year old and worth $300 apiece, according to the report.

Could the thefts be a charged message to Mayor Fenty that the District needs a community bicycle program? Or a secret oppo effort by the forces of D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray to hobble the Mayor’s get-out-the-vote campaign by hitting him where it hurts — his ride?

It’s the Fentys who got robbed, but it looks as if it’s the police who will pay. Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier brought up at least one officer on charges of neglect. Fraternal Order of Police Metropolitan Police Department Labor Committee chief Kristopher Baumann — who told WTOP earlier this month that MPD was trying to “destroy” the police union — said that Fenty’s security detail are unable to patrol the property and therefore can’t do their jobs.
