Don Peebles, the District’s longest-running mayoral non-candidate, appeared this morning on WPFW radio, where he finally announced that no, he won’t be running for mayor. Mike Neibauer of the Washington Business Journal tweeted: “Peebles ‘planned to run as an independent,’ he tells Jonetta. ‘You never say never, but I do not plan to be a candidate.'” Finally. Some closure. Since late last year, Peebles has publicly toyed with the idea of bringing his total lack of experience and deep pockets to the mayoral contest, setting up a somewhat awkward dance between him and now-candidate Vince Gray. But even when Gray entered the race in March, Peebles could still be found entertaining the idea of running, going so far as to claim that he’d jump in the fray after the Democratic primary if Mayor Adrian Fenty were not defeated then. That no longer seems like it will happen. Or will it? Neibauer quotes Peebles as adding, “If I felt that one of the candidates were transformation and what the District truly needed, I never would run.” Oh jeez. That sounds like a loophole large enough to drive his non-candidacy through. Again. Some observers have lost their patience with Peebles’ mayoral hokey-pokey. Tweets the Washington Post’s Mike DeBonis: “Enough of this guy.”
