“The Vince Gray for Mayor Campaign will open its citywide field office headquarters in the heart of Ward 4. Come by for the ribbon cutting and an opportunity to speak to Chairman Gray,” says a brief press release issued this afternoon by mayoral contender Vince Gray’s campaign. This might strike most people as a mere campaign office ribbon-cutting, but to to me, it looks like Gray is setting up shop in the heart of what has traditionally been Mayor Adrian Fenty’s home base. (Gray’s campaign headquarters are by Mt. Vernon Square; this will be a field office.) Fenty represented Ward 4 on the D.C. Council, and he still lives there. Council member Muriel Bowser, Fenty’s replacement, is a stalwart ally of the mayor. Heck, Fenty’s own campaign headquarters is just over a mile up the road. But Fenty’s traditional base in Ward 4 seems to be souring on the mayor — there have been many a report on a preponderance of Gray yard signs in the ward — and this move seems like a clear-cut declaration that Gray is going straight for the jugular in his bid to win the city’s highest office. Ballsy move, Vince. Will we see a Fenty field office in Ward 7 open in coming weeks?
