The City Paper points us to good news for District residents. The Whitman-Walker Clinic is extending National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) to a full week in D.C. NHTD, which takes place on June 27 this year, is a Department of Health & Human Services initiative to raise awareness of and to increase testing for HIV nationwide.

Unlike the rest of the country, however, the District’s population has epidemic levels of infection. In light of that fact, the Whitman-Walker Clinic is expanding their offerings of free testing from Friday, June 25 through Tuesday, June 29. “National HIV Testing Day is an opportunity to remind the Washington, D.C., area community how important it is to get tested,” Dr. Raymond Martins, chief medical officer of Whitman-Walker Clinic, said in a statement. “In D.C., we know that more than three percent of the population has been diagnosed with HIV. However, sampling studies have shown that approximately five percent of the District population has HIV.” Whitman-Walker’s mobile HIV testing unit will be accepting walk ins at several locations in the District starting tomorrow:
