UPDATE: Finally, MPD has confirmed that the package is not hazardous, but officers remain on the scene. Traffic has been a mess down there, so if you’re getting behind the wheel anytime soon, avoid the area at all costs.
Via our tip line, the Secret Service has closed 19th Street NW to traffic between at least F and H Streets. According to a tipster who works in the area, at least one surrounding building has been put on lockdown, pushing gathering crowds, just showing up for work, further down F Street. The area under investigation is the core of the IMF/World Bank complex. D.C. Fire and EMS tweets that Special Ops and Haz Mat teams are on site assisting MPD in the investigation. More details when we get them. More details now from The GW Hatchet: “a regular suspicious package” has closed F Street from 18th Street to 20th Street and 19th Street from E Street to Pennsylvania Avenue, stifling some freshman orientation proceedings at the university. Sounds like a fairly routine investigation, but we’ll keep you updated.
