I’m loathe to even give this kind of nonsense the time of day, but since it’s been repeated numerous times this week, I suppose it deserves clarification: Mark Segraves reports that D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier didn’t take too kindly to the rumors that she had covered up calls made to the police regarding Mayor Adrian Fenty’s marriage and accusations of domestic disturbances.

Speaking with WTOP this morning, Lanier had the following to say:

“Actually, those rumors surfaced – I believe – as soon as he began running for mayor, and they’ve been around ever since,” Lanier said. “Periodically, they will pop back up, but I can tell you without any question, nobody in the Metropolitan Police Department would cover that up. Certainly, I wouldn’t cover that up as a district commander.” […] “Clearly, there’s plenty of people who would like to report things like that about me or about the mayor,” Lanier told WTOP.

For what its worth, Fenty categorically denied the rumors on Tuesday in an interview with WPGC-95.5. stating that he was “[v]ery happily married” and that the rumor “borders on libel and slander.”

It’s hard to disagree with either Lanier or Fenty, regardless of your political affiliations; even for D.C. politics, this is beyond slime.
