Photo by Amberture.Good morning, Washington. You’ll have to excuse the Morning Roundup’s tardiness this morning; your DCist editor-in-chief was very busy trying mightily to not fall over into vomit-scented oil on U Street this morning. (Note: success!)
Go West, Young Man: The Post’s Lisa Rein reports that a cadre of legislators are reviving a plan which would see more long-distance flights leaving from Reagan National Airport, despite the fact that a larger volume of flights means big issues for residents of Northern Virginia. The new plan would ease the “perimeter rule” — which dictates that the airport is only allowed 12 flights of more than 1,250 miles per day — allowing carriers up to 60 long-nonstop flights to the far west. The rule is in place to prevent air and noise pollution for residents near the airport. It’s a tricky issue — more flights from National might help encourage competition, and there’s obvious benefits for flying into DCA for westerners who do business in D.C. On the other hand, there’s always Dulles; and it’s hardly shocking that the legislators who are pushing the hardest for the change would stand to personally benefit the most from it.
Fenty Friend Licensed Despite Failing Exam: Bill Myers notes in the Examiner that the District has issued an engineering license to a man who has failed the professional engineering exam seven times since 2002. Abdullahi Barrow — who is also involved in the investigation into public park contracts given to companies owned by friends and fraternity brothers of Mayor Fenty — was unanimously granted a license because of “eminence,” only the fourth such license ever granted by the D.C. board of engineers. According to Barrow’s lawyer, Barrow “sounds like he’s qualified”. We’d argue that’s what the test is for, sir.
More Details On July 4 Metro Death: According to the AP, the person who was struck and killed by an Orange Line train at Minnesota Avenue on July 4 was a law student at the College of William and Mary. Joseph Doyle, a third-year student from Oklahoma, was killed at 3 a.m. by an outbound train. WMATA is saying that it is “likely” that Doyle fell accidentally onto the tracks, and a preliminary investigation has ruled out foul play.
Briefly Noted: Tree at 4th and I streets has come to symbolize the battle between developers and a community…Vigil held for slain former Congressional intern…Proposed US Airways/Delta DCA swap falls through…More power outages in the area overnight…Yup, it’s still really, really hot.
This Day In DCist: Last year, Spider-Man announced he was running for mayor. (Batwoman soon followed.)
