When I got an email invitation to taste a new brew called Batch 19, my friend Tammy of the Lagerheads told me to bring “at least two or three other MillerCoors offerings.” I laughed, thinking that was funny, since she leans toward Belgians and small American craft brewers. I wrote back something about bringing some Bud Ice Lime Light Dry Ultra, or some such buzzword beer. But on the walk over, I called to check in and found out that she wasn’t kidding: she wanted some lighter macrobrews for comparison to the new Coors release.
Batch 19 is based on a pre-Prohibition recipe which was recently dug up from an old brewing logbook. The idea is to give drinkers a taste of what beer tasted like before many old recipes were lost during Prohibition.
It’s also rumored that Coors want to release a smaller batch brew, like their Blue Moon, to reach out to the craft beer market. Batch 19 was initially released in May to a limited number of bars in only five cities — Chicago, Milwaukee, San Jose, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Local distribution has since expanded, and you can find the brew at 18th Amendment, Iron Horse, Bar Pilar, Bistro La Bonne, and other bars.
