Take that, west coast. Washington, D.C. is the most “veg-friendly” city in North America, according to PETA-affiliated blog, The Peta Files. D.C. beat out nearly every single large city on the left coast, ranking higher than Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, San Francisco and Los Angeles. (Olympia, Washington did top the blog’s list of smaller cities.)

The author of the rankings gives shout-outs to Java Green, Busboys and Poets and Sunflower Vegetarian Restaurant in Falls Church for offering some of the metro area’s most kick-ass vegetarian options. Personally — and speaking from the perspective of someone who enjoys being a carnivore, thank you — I’ve had some unbelievable vegetarian fare at Amsterdam Falafelshop. (It was quite unfair that I stumbled upon the photo to the above right before lunch.) In an informal poll, DCist staffers let it be known that Sticky Fingers bakery in Columbia Heights — specifically their biscuits and gravy, made without butter — is a big favorite, as is Asylum’s vegan brunch, the vegan soul food at Soul Veg and the Maoz chain of vegetarian fast food eateries.

So where’s your spot? Prove this town’s legitimacy as a veg-head’s heaven by leaving your favorite place to dine on vegetarian or vegan meals in the comments.
