Good morning, Washington. Did you get caught in last night’s pretty impressive thunderstorm? We got quite a show as far as thunder and lightning, but we won’t see much of a break in the weather. It’s going to be miserable again today, with highs in the mid-90’s and high humidity. Oh, and what’s the forecast for tomorrow? Another scorcher. Not cool. Also, as much as we try by posting photos of water on hot days, it still doesn’t seem to be lowering the temperature.
Oh, and yes this is my first post at DCist as a weekend editor. I’m Dave, and I’ve written for a few other area blogs. I’m excited to be here, and will be serving you mostly links to news, politics, and humorous videos. Yes, you’ll have that Kenmore ad stuck in your head all morning, but think of it as a special service just for most loyal of readers.
>> Union says they can do the impossible: fix Metro’s escalators. To be honest, when I first saw this Washington Post headline I though the claims would be coming from Metro’s own employee union. If that were the case, I wouldn’t believe it. Rather, the International Union of Elevator Constructors Local 10 says they have the know-how to get things moving again. The union has been placing fliers at Metro stations, including Dupont Circle–where an escalator recently caught on fire.
>> Earth-shattering revelation from ABC7: “Outlook for more quakes: No one knows.” Yep, no idea if we’ll get more, but the experts all say a big one is unlikely. Don’t miss NBC4’s Pat Collins coverage of the quake survivors.
>> West Nile virus detected in Alexandria. If you head out to Virginia this weekend, douse yourself in Off! periodically and remember to designate someone in your group to carry the tiki torch. Also, if you actually do live in the affected area, be careful and clean up standing water and all of that.
>> Police mistakenly shoot dog in Chevy Chase. MPD officers shot a 9-year-old border collie twice after a burglar alarm was accidentally triggered. The police response was apparently so quick in the Northwest neighborhood that the false alarm information never made it to the officers. The dog, Gidget, lived and the District is considering paying the $19,000 vet bill. Only in Chevy Chase.
