There’s been no shortage of notice, but since news anchors described it as potentially “confusing” this morning, I suppose it’s worth noting again — DDOT rolled out several parking pilots today, including more multi-space meters and another pay-by-phone application.

DDOT has contracted with ParkMobile to operate 1,000 metered spaces (marked with a sticker like the one to the right) in Foggy Bottom, on Reservoir Road in Georgetown, and around Nationals Park. To participate in the pay-by-phone program, drivers have to sign up for an account at www.parkmobile.com, then download an application. ParkMobile will be waiving transaction fees — which can run “up to 35 cents,” according to their website — during the pilot.

DDOT’s first pay-by-phone pilot was launched in April, and covered Dupont Circle, Union Station and K Street, I Street, and New York Avenue NW downtown. It’s worth noting that this summer pilot is slightly different than the one launched in the spring: the first pilot was handled by Verrus Mobile Technologies, Inc., and involved a different website (paybyphone.com) and phone number to sign up for service (1-888-510-PARK). DDOT says that drivers can still sign up for the Verrus service in those areas involved in the spring pilot. (Of course, having to deal with two separate companies to pay for parking by phone kind of defeats the purpose of making paying for parking less complicated.)

The most-loved feature of the pay-by-phone pilot — getting a text message when your time is almost up — is also available with the ParkMobile application.

Additionally, Cale Parking Systems USA has been contracted by DDOT to operate a new “pay-by-license plate” system on the 1300 block of U Street NW — drivers enter their license plate number into an electronic multi-space meter and then pay by card, coins or phone. These meters are expected to be operational at some point later this week.
