Photo by Paul Frederiksen.Good morning, Washington. Air travel is bad enough without severe turbulence that throws passengers out of their seats and leaves cracks in the side of the cabin. But that’s just what those on a flight between Dulles International Airport and Los Angeles experienced last night; 30 people were injured, one critically, when the flight hit “a huge up and down” over Kansas.
Big Bear Cafe Liquor License Opposed: Speaking of turbulence, Advisory Neighborhood Commission 5C unanimously opposed a liquor license for the Big Bear Cafe in Bloomingdale at a long and contentious meeting last night. (A big tip of the cap to in bloom for live tweeting the meeting.) A group of citizens that had banded together in opposition to the Bear’s license and rejected owner Stu Davenport’s attempts at a voluntary agreement succeeded in convincing the ANC that Big Bear’s license would result in more parking, trash and noise around the cafe. (You know, because there isn’t parking, trash and noise in the community as it is. Ahem.) Anyway, it sounds like Davenport got a raw deal: Housing Complex reports that commissioner John Salatti — the Bear’s biggest supporter on the Commission — couldn’t make the meeting, another petitioner argued in favor of a license before the vote on Big Bear’s license and then Davenport got a talking to by comissioner Gigi Ransom, who said that she “wish[ed] Stu had worked more with us” despite Davenport being told not to talk to the ANC about the license.
Two Suicides Affect Witnesses, Traffic: Emergency personnel responded to a shooting death in Georgetown early this morning — the man, who was found with a single gunshot wound in his parked car on M Street NW, is believed to have taken his own life. M Street was closed off for a couple of hours this morning as police investigated. Meanwhile, ARLnow has the frightening details from those who witnessed a man leap to his death from the seventh floor of an office building in Rosslyn yesterday.
Corker Carjacker Convicted: Alliteration aside, the 25-year-old who stole the car of Julia Corker — daughter of Senator Robert Corker (R.-Tenn.) — after assaulting her in December 2009 was sentenced to nine years in jail on Tuesday. His accomplice pled guilty to robbery in March and will be sentenced on Thursday. Of course they both pled out; it’s a genius move in comparison to the way they got caught.
Briefly Noted: Shocking: some thieves use Craigslist to swindle people…D.C. adding several new speed cameras; citations start on August 11…Nationals sign Cuban defector…Prince George’s man will be remembered as “one of America’s most infamous killers“…Drive-by shooting at home near Deanwood Metro station.
This Day In DCist: Last year, Molly got home safely.
