The ladies of Chlamydia dell’Arte present a series of sex-ed vignettes, framed by videos of them as frumpy human sexuality teachers and real-life interview excerpts of women talking about the birds and the bees.
Meghann Williams is strongest when delivering a few stand-up storytelling bits, particularly about how her Barbies got it on and what happened when Jem and She-Ra tried to get in on the action. However, a nonchalant story about getting blackout drunk and date-raped, only to set up a mediocre joke in the end as a punchline, strikes an awkward chord. Gigi Naglak moves gracefully around the stage in several burlesque ballet numbers and humorously debates contraceptive methods with a talking vagina puppet.
The show delivers a contrast of comedy against a straightforward yet rudimentary message of being pro-sex while looking out for those pesky STDs. That’s punctuated by a striptease on stage while facts about infections are projected on the screen backing them. So why watch the screen? Lucky for those who were too busy reading about syphilis to pay attention to the dancers, Williams gives a little extra incentive for the audience to vote the performance Best of the Fringe. Tassel swirl, and scene.
Chlamydia dell’Arte: A Sex-Ed Burlesque concludes its run on Saturday, July 24 at 10:30pm and Sunday, July 25 at 1pm at the Baldacchino Gypsy Tent Bar at Fort Fringe.
