“Put the pussy on a pedestal/take the penis down. Put the power in your vag and shake it all around.” Don’t think that refrain was part of Aristophanes’ Lysistrata in 411 BC, an ancient Greek play about a woman’s quest to end war by withholding sex from the men of Athens and Sparta until they sign a peace treaty. But this is Lysistrata: The Musical! and the heroines of the young and attractive cast are firm believers in the power of the beaver; and aren’t shy about singing about that fact.

Jeremy King and the rest of the Public Seed Theater Company sets the raunchy lyrics to catchy tunes backed by his keyboarding and belted well by a strong ensemble, headed by Katie Nigsch Fairfax’s Lysistrata and Autumn Seavy as Myrrhine. The adaptation gets an original boost with the interjection of goddesses Hera (Katie Brobst), Aphrodite (Chelsea Rae-Abbate), and the blind justice Themis (Mia Branco) helping out womankind from a landing above the stage.

Paring down the comedy into a one-hour musical leaves some gaps: how do three woman take over the treasury? And the long-standing plot has some long-standing head scratchers of its own to get past. What will withholding the vajajay matter if husbands are away from years at a time if they ever make it back from war? And the sacrifice seems easy for Lysistrata to make. The protagonist is the only character without a man of her own and it seems like she could hail from that famed island of Lesbos anyway, if you know what I mean.

Lysistrata: the Musical! has two matinee shows remaining on July 24 at 1:30pm and July 25 at 4:00pm at the Warehouse Theater.
