Akron, Ohio’s The Black Keys stopped at DAR Constitution Hall last night in support the release of their latest album, Brothers. The openers, San Francisco’s The Morning Benders, played a conservative set until the the closing jam “Excuses.” The devolution from wistful vocal harmonies into a crescendo of sonic furor and feedback spiked the energy level in the room, bringing the somewhat listless audience to its feet. The Benders’ sound was somewhat less robust than the stunningly layered “wall of sound” production the band used in their latest release, Big Echo, but they got the job done, nonetheless. When it was the Keys’ turn to take the stage, the duo did not disappoint. Dan Auerbach’s gritty, blues-laden guitar licks cut through the muddy acoustics of the packed hall with a kind of sonic sincerity that is one of his band’s hallmarks. All muscle and roar, the Keys’ tunes covered a lot of ground and left few in attendance wanting more.
