This morning, mayoral contender Vince Gray presented his plan for economic development in the District, criticizing Mayor Adrian Fenty for ignoring the issue, while outlining a broad, if vague plan to get more District residents to work.

Gray’s plan, presented during a speech at Ray’s the Steaks at East River in Ward 7, argues that Fenty has not provided D.C. with a comprehensive economic or workforce development program, helping push unemployment to 19 percent in Ward 7 and close to 30 percent in Ward 8. Gray’s plan also speaks to a theme that has been present throughout the campaign — while certain parts of the District have done well under Fenty, others have either stagnated or gotten worse.

“This lack of jobs in the District is a ticking time bomb that affects us all. And the current administration has virtually ignored unemployment, doing little, if anything, to deal with this growing crisis – focusing more on creating jobs for the Mayor’s friends and allies than on the growing number of District residents trying to make ends meet,” reads the plan’s introduction.

By way of his own economic development plan, Gray proposes, well, everything.
